David Upegui
David Upegui
David Upegui (him/him/his) is a Latino immigrant who found his way out of poverty through science. He has been a teacher for 10 years at his alma mater, Central Falls High School in Central Falls, Rhode Island.
Upegui currently teaches 11th and 12th-grade AP Biology and Anatomy and works as an induction coach with new teachers. His personal philosophy and inclusive approach to science education have enabled students to become problem-solvers and innovative thinkers. He has a keen ability to engage students in learning, exploring, and contributing to science.
Upegui started, and runs, the school's Science Olympiad team and has contributed to many publications on science education and appropriate pedagogy, as well as written questions for the College Board. He has presented sessions on science education, evolutionary theory, and social justice in several conferences.
Upegui is completing his doctoral degree at the University of Rhode Island and has received several teaching awards, including NABT’s Evolution Education Award, the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence, the Latino Public Radio Outstanding Achievement, and RI Department of Education’s Golden Apple. Finally, last year (2017 cohort) he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
